I have been watching your blog and it looks great. I operate the opensim grid named CentralGrid.com we have about 260 regions active and just about 1400 members. We have seen many issues with server loads and avatar usage.

It is pretty overwhelming, especially when you realize the soft green glow around the community is caused by individual prims. When set to midnight, the build is magical from that point of view.
I've tried to avoid using alpha textures so almost everything in there is a prim-based object except for the few system trees and some of the grasses. Right now we're testing how the hardware/software works out the way real people would use it to build prim-based stuff. But in our next sim drop, we'll be focusing more on the widespread use of textures to see how that impacts performance. At some point, I hope we can open the sim, but for right now, it has to stay a true 'walled garden'.
Our OpenSims are hosted on the IBM yellow Zone, and it's a closed research environment. Our SL islands are open to the public, though, and anyone may visit.
Hello, I also work with opensim, Ihave tlaked to you in SL about opensim. Do you have public access you your opensim regions? I would love to just take a look around.
Thanks!
