3d Model in MAX and export to all platforms...

We want to creat content for all platforms using industry standard 3D modelling software - 3D Studio Max. We prefer worlds which allow us to export to their platform using this app or plugins.

Platforms like secondlife will gather momentum if they allow this feature.
Can you post here if you know of plugins for MAX which allow this.
Can you comment on the Pros and Cons of "3d Model in MAX and export to all platforms..."

On the plus side, I'm sure the quality of models available will improve tremendously; I'm not a great fan of SL's native modelling software and learning how to make stuff of your own takes considerable time and effort. As a training provider, I want to be able to create 3D content that looks authentic, detailed, and most of all accurate. Much of our graphical resources are held as MAX files, so being able to transplant them into a VW is a huge bonus.

On the negative side, there are a lot of people who have invested time and effort to become proficient at making things using prims, and the best of them can make significant amounts Linden Dollars selling products to other SL residents. What happens to the SL economy when it becomes cheaper to import 3D content from elsewhere? I suspect there are many more modellers out there using 3D Studio or Maya than there are making stuff in SL and that will have quite an impact on price.

Permalink Reply by csven on April 22, 2008 at 7:33pm: Just as a reminder, it's a simple process to rip 3D files from the videostream and upload them independently (or have them fabbed). Thus, the content which people hope to someday bring into SL will be ripe for the same kinds of content theft already plaguing the virtual world's skin creators. More than that, those 3D files might make their way to a 3D sales website. Or get uploaded to Novoking, which allows mesh uploads. Or sold as packs to architectural viz services needing filler. Or "shared" in other ways.
