Call me crazy, but one day I would love to be working as an artist creating worlds as a full time profession. Does anyone here know of some great resources for working towards that goal? I know for companies that are more game-focussed (like ones that make MMORPGS and such) gamasutra.com is a great place for finding companies and (more useful to me) for researching what skills companies are looking for. Is there a similar resource for up and coming virtual world companies. I am thinking beyond the SL forums where you can get a job as an in-world escort for $L1000 per hour. Places where funded groups who have not even gone beta yet are looking for artists to become part of the team.

The timing worked out so well that it actually looks like I was setting it up for you to make an announcement. The service is greatly needed and I'm looking forward to being able to use it one day.

It's an excellent resource. Most of the jobs require a lot of experience.
I am looking for something more low or mid level. I am able to model
and render with 3dsmax and Photoshop and am very good with .html
and Dreamweaver. I have a very good understanding of web3d, both
technically and aesthetically. Due to my involvement with web3d and gaming,
I have become very adept and versatile with Operating Systems in general,
and also PC's.

However, my recent job experiences are all "moonlighting" in nature.
And the longer I "moonlight" the more out of date my resume becomes.
I also have very little server side experience as server side experience
comes from a job. I've learned my skills via the internet. I also picked
up a few tips from friends who are Engineers(they got trained and
certified by their company)

The positions that are listed are only available to the lucky few
who were able to get entry level jobs and now get rehired over
and over again. As this person gets more experience, so does
the experience required for jobs(it goes up). So this person's
experience matches the needs because he got job in the first place.

I look forward to receiving job listings aimed at normal people who
just want a job in an industry we want to be involved with.
Not all of us have a need to make 100,000 dollars a year.
Some of us need to make much less.

Most of these listings are for Art Directors, Senior Programmers
and basically are listings for people who already have jobs.

Obviously this thread has gone quiet for quite some time since the last post was in November. I'm jumping in now because I just discovered VW Connect and this group, this is the first forum I've encountered where the participants sound like colleagues.

Reading through these posts, I suppose I've been lucky because I've had a fulltime staff job building 3D virtual environments, and I'm not a programmer, but it was not to last as I was recently laid off. It was a tiny company and such places are still outposts on the frontier. I've been doing 3D pretty much since it started (with many bouts of unemployment along the way), first in games, then forensic work, before coming into web3D through the back door, so to speak. My length of experience is actually a liability as long as there's younger/faster/cheaper out there, but that's another story ;).

I guess this serves as an introduction, I share in the frustration of finding or maintaining employment in this field, good luck to all.

Although it is game related, there is IGDA (International Game Developers Association) and recently VirtualWorldsJobs.

I too would love to work in that field. All the times I have spent and learned about VW and 3d were all done as a hobby. I am thinking about getting myself an internet site devoted to this.
