Call me crazy, but one day I would love to be working as an artist creating worlds as a full time profession. Does anyone here know of some great resources for working towards that goal? I know for companies that are more game-focussed (like ones that make MMORPGS and such) gamasutra.com is a great place for finding companies and (more useful to me) for researching what skills companies are looking for. Is there a similar resource for up and coming virtual world companies. I am thinking beyond the SL forums where you can get a job as an in-world escort for $L1000 per hour. Places where funded groups who have not even gone beta yet are looking for artists to become part of the team.

SL also I think created the first economy. This perhaps is the most important feature.
Secondly, I get the impression they provide a good back up to these companies.
So they did a real excellent job here, of providing a JumpStart, support and a backbone
for a 3d economy.
I've been looking for one of those grind mill jobs for years :) Maybe when companies see that I've been working for so many years as a creative professional (though not as a game artist) they think I'll want to be treated like a human being from the get-go.

I think GoGoFrog in Australia have started doing basic 3D webpages. You get a room wiht sevral walls and you can move the walls around, re-colour them etc then add all your text or graphics. Visitor come in through a door and wander round.
Basic but a start, I don't have the url to hand but a search for the distinctive name will bring it up.

Gogo frog looks pretty cool. How come all these 3d requires you to move with
the keyboard? I dont like WASD movement unless you are in a game environment. web3d needs
to focus on easy navigation with the mouse.
Tentengo in England has the same thing with x3d.
In2003 I focused my website on creating customized art galleries. Originally I planned to duplicate
paying art galleries.... and if they wanted something different than their brick and mortar, I could do
that too. Idea was a simple art gallery chat room. Click on a pic and it will open a window with
purchasing info or whatever.
I found software , like GOGOfrog that allows you to customize the look of your art gallery, but my plan was to create
Hi quality (not able to be accomplished via templates) 3d art galleries, and not an off the shelf 3d.
But then Second Life wasn't even around yet, and even in 2d, art galleries are not that well represented.
And REAL web3d has not proven to be a very supportive community in the past, or currently, and probably
for the future.
I read about the Guggenheim museum in 3d... but all I find is TALK and descriptions of it. I still think
this is a very great idea... to place a 3d gallery on every art galleries site.
There are fundamental problems with GoGoFrog and TenTenGo.
1. No matter what you do, the apartment space is damn boring.
In real life, why would you want to return to an ugly space?
Vside provides apartments that you can't even customize, yet
I totally hang out. I believe in the future, VSide is going to offer apartments
that you can "own" or"rent" , and I look forward to tweaking their already beautiful
template. Gogofrog and tentengo have lousy templates.
2. boring, so what to do? 1. music 2. if you walk out of the apartment , you are connected to a DOWNTOWN! which
is the other draw to web3d.... just walking around and exploring and seeing others do the same thing.
Both of these spaces, make one feel isolated. The initial flow of a web3d space should lead a user
into a communal space.
Maybe some enterprising soul in this network would take it upon themselves to create a job board. With the amount of people who have joined up so far it seems to me that there is a good deal of interest amongst people who are creating worlds to find like minded individuals to work together.
I know within Second Life I have 3D art galleries you can walk around, go up and down between floors etc, some of my galleries are stand alone some are a communal multi artist gallery. the multi artist version gets more people, turning up because of the variety of styles available to choose from.
A similar 3D website would probably work the same way, even better if its connected to a 'print shop' type set up where people could order their prints directly from the one place a digital download option could also be use-able if works were suitably protected.
I second the motion of creating a job board , here. I believe there is one on virtualworldsconnect, but perhaps it can be more effective here.
With the art galleries, I think each website(url) should have their own 3d chat room.
Then this chatroom should be connected with a larger downtown which focuses
on art galleries and perhaps stream music. (only reason I wouldn't stream music
is that it requires large bandwidth. However, I've created radio stations at live365
that are bandwidth friendly......).
The disadvantage of using second life is that it requires a high bandwidth, and a
strong computer. The initial file size is 20 megs PLUS. Too big.
I think Vside is very close to a perfect 3d world, and maybe I should just apply for a job
doing something there.
The chats and blogs ideas are workable, this forum is just one step away from it I think. Live streaming of music I wouldn't agree with, I'm losing my hearing, and as I've found with sites using live streaming it stops me hearing what's going on around me. Same reason I won't go into shopping areas that play that awful muzak.
I looked at Vside and it has potential, for now though it seems aimed at teenagers. I'd like it to go down a similar route to SecondLife with a more open market for artists etc to set up businesses. At the moment that is very limited, but seems to be opening up for those who can make specific items for teenagers like clothes.
Funny how most worlds are aimed at teenagers. These teenage gamers grow up
to be adult gamers. I am first generation adult gamer. And I can tell you that
I am seeking VW's that are not aimed at an age group. I would like to see
an open web3d internet with very little control or restrictions. Most of VW
is themed today its like going to a closed amusement park. I am interested
in the world OUTSIde of the amusement park.
I am still a big fan of VRML/X3d because even a kid can get some webspace
and put up 3d scenes. VrML easily allows unrestricted content anywhere
on the web,...anywhere. What VRML needs are more VW"S that functions
as a larger meeting place and social place.
So in my view, there will be 3d webpages, 3d worlds... all using VRML
(like using .html the user doesn't think about the language or platform...
he just thinks...OH, 3d!) Obviously some VW"s will have themes and high quality
worlds.
But for me part of the fun is finding some off the wall, random 3d world made by some
guy far far away from me. 8)
