As the credit crunch hits my sales in rl and sl, I'm looking at shutting down my sl membership. I may take a free avatar to keep in touch, but sales don't make it worthwhile keeping land etc.
I'm looking at sales in other areas, such as t-shirts at www.redbubble.com under kenwalters, and I've made an approach to DAZ 3D about textures and art for them.
This move has been "inspired" by my bank manager, they're getting restless with accounts whose incomes have gone down recently-which is their poli… Continue

Greetings VWC,
I just signed up and am excited to join a new community of like-minded persons. I figured my first blog should be worth some thought so I want to share with you why I'm excited about working with virtual worlds.
I've been in this game a while and the events of late have got me convinced that our collective endeavor into this new space are on the radar. Interest in Virtual Worlds continue to grow. The potential for learning and entertainment as well as a majority of other matters… Continue

Hello,
What a nice book. It lists many virtual worlds, but I couldn't find 3d planets.
Why is that not included? There are a few others. I wonder what
criteria They used to figure out this list membership?
Can someone tell me why Vrml/x3d is like..... verboten? Continue

These settings are tweaked for use with the current default SL client, as the old WL settings I have on my blog are now obsolete. This is based on the default midday setting with some tweaks so your avatar will look better with local lighting AND atmospheric shaders (no need to turn them off). It's recommended to use a very faint face lamp or none at all in public (consider it as doing the public a service that your face lamps won't be blinding anyone else on WL!). Note that the lighting is unif… Continue

For the past few months, I have been getting to know Second Life, Entropia and Open Sim.
Up until March 2008, I was looking and creating a small Virtual World in the Torque engine (currently used at IBM as Metaverse). I gave up on it as I was getting tired of the inexistance of proper documentations, ambigous community answers, re-occuring problems, missing/odd functionalities (ex:no transparency for structures, lack of animated textures, ...). Licenced software.
==> Torque is made by… Continue

These past few months have brought about a rather exciting surge of announcements and renewed energy around the OpenSIM project, the open source virtual world platform. Though it is still alpha level code, the future potential is obvious, especially for those of us anxiously awaiting the ability to import 3D models created, textured and rendered in externa… Continue

Spotted this on TechCrunch. Also, 3B has already tried to build virtual spaces from people's social media content such as images. But as the one comment on the video notes, hard to tell if this is ridiculous or brilliant. Someone is going to crack the intersection between social networks and 3D worlds, but not sure what it will take to win.

So..... I got a Psp.... and I am amazed at its ultility!
Its pretty easy to connect to an available network and
surf the 2d information web.... the best part
is the gaming. Its just a pefect device .
Now I expect
1. Goggles
2. A Virtual World for PSP......
3.....and a phone function...
I envision myself using PSP for entertainment
and pc for deeper applications, work applications etc.
But the Virtual Worlds would be so rock and roll on the Psp.
I usually travel vw's with one hand on my chin...… Continue

I am pleased to announce that the Canopus Research Inc. Second Life headquarters office will soon be located in the Soheil region (formerly Strawberry), recently acquired from my friend Coolz0r Courier. Soheil is one of the English renderings of the Arabic/Persian word for the star Canopus, for which Canopus Research was named when the business was originally registered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, RL in 1982.
The deal to purchase the sim was made more than two weeks ago but, distracted by… Continue

I have not been easy on the Linden's lately. Like many other Second Life residents and business people I find the recent unreliablity of the grid troublesome. The severity of the problems these past few weeks leads one to worry about the future of Second Life. One worries they just never will get it to work properly; that SL might simply limp along until a competitive world comes on line with the full range of capabilities of SL (or more) to displace it.
But perhap one ought to step back a bit,… Continue

Having recently returned from the Virtual Worlds 2008 Conference in New York City, where I had only an old and pathetically slow laptop with lousy graphics, I was looking forward to coming home to my powerful, self-built desktop system with killer graphics and two displays - and being able actually to move and to do things in world in Second Life again. So much for positive expectations.
Second Life is a total catastrophe (again!) today. I wrote here a couple weeks ago on the question of whethe… Continue

Titanic Virtually Unreal
I’ve just been given a demo of a Virtual Space by Joe Rigby of Mellanium Studios, where they’ve created a live scale replica of the Titanic using the Unreal 2 engine and roughly 850,000 polygons. It’s quite impressive. Check it out, more info after the Video.

Today we are going to break down the first part of the Business Plan which is called the Executive Summary. This portion of the plan can also be thought of as the overview which describes the key facts, issues, and conclusions of the entire document. This is NOT the place where you will go into detail about the purposes, methods, or strategies of your business plan.
Think of the Business Plan as the introductory paragraph of a high school paper. Remember that the introductory paragraph was desi… Continue

When you are starting a new business whether it is a mid-sized capital venture project or a small home based business there are several essential steps that need to be taken to ensure that you have a plan of action to keep the company moving forward.
In the business world this is called a "Business Plan". The definition of a business plan is "a written plan that lists the financial and operational objectives of the company". This can be a very valuable tool for your company if it is well though… Continue

MellaniuM to create Virtual Real Worlds for Autistic Research.
Virtual Real Worlds are to be used to simulate new 3D environments for people in the autistic spectrum. For people with autism, VRWs are way of setting up realistic social situations that might be encountered in their everyday lives. For people who have social, emotional, communicational problems VRWs can enable them to familiarise with a simulated situational environment before actually experiencing in real life.

If you're into experimenting with "alpha" code I highly recommend that you play with OpenSim I compiled OpenSim on my MacBook Pro and have everything up and running with the latest SL client. Courtesy of the Macstein blog, this news on a device from Boxfab that an iPhone can be attached to an iPhone for immersive virtual experiences. Sounds a little fishy, but conceptually very cool.
PrimetimeRewind is in alpha, so too soon to say if the service is promising, but the Flash interface offers another example of ways in which 3D or dimensionalized experiences will continue to shape the Visual Web.
