My take-aways from the Virtual Worlds Conference in Silicon Valley, October 10-11, 2007

I wanted to share my observations from the virtual worlds 1007 conference here. Please feel free to comment on them.

In a nutshell, these ideas that took precedence:
*Interoperability (both between and across virtual worlds anad btw the traditional 2-d web and 3-d worlds
*What is happening to bring the SL communities outside the SL firewall?
*Can we twitter via SL?
*How can we port 2-d online social network spaces into 3-D workspaces?
*How can we use virtual worlds to augment our every day real-life work meetings?
*How can we create open standards in virtual worlds?
*How can we use tools to shape togetherness and provide an easier and more relevant way to communicate online?

I just had a very interesting conversation with a staff member from a very large foundation, and his thoughts about the potential for virtual worlds in the Nonprofit sector echo others from Foundations (and my own). This is a direct quote:"Witha good organizational structure, there is no reason that foundations would not be throwing money in the direction of virtual worlds". So far, we got the sim (and one in waiting) from Anshe Chung, and a few thousand bucks from the Boomer Esiason Foundation. I am wondering, though, if we were to get some significant funding, like in range of $100k, could we effectively set up a virtual worlds nonprofit, in the way that Games For Change did? Who would be interested in starting this discussion thread with me, just for fun, of course... ;)
